QUESTIONS TO ASK

First, the practice of Feng Shui has no national qualifications or mandated regulations. Anyone can proclaim themselves to be a Feng Shui consultant.

A Feng Shui Consultant or Teacher has usually come to this art/science because of basic intuitive skills. But, intuitive skills are not enough to take responsibility for advising someone on their life space.

Make sure the consultant or teacher has trained with a viable, established master from the school of Feng Shui they practice. Ask who they studied under and the credentials of who taught them. Also, did they physically learn under the master or take an "online" course or simply read a lot of Feng Shui books.

Today,  book stores are full of books about Feng Shui. many are beautifully illustrated and nicely written. Yet, the important issue is - does it mention anywhere in the book or flapjacket the credentials of the author?

You need to determine by conversation with the consultant(s) you talk to if you are comfortable with their answers, to the questions you ask.

Use your own intuition to guide you.

1. Do they belong to any Feng Shui Society or Organization?

Some Feng Shui Organizations are starting to set standards for practitioners. yet, do not confuse belonging to a Feng Shui Society or Organization with being an accredited practitioner. For instance, you or I can be a member or even president of a Garden Club, but it does not mean we are a botanist!

2. What type of Feng Shui do they practice?

There are quite a few schools of Feng Shui, you will need to determine from the potential consultant,  if the type of school they practice,  is a fit for your needs. Also, ask what other practices or beliefs they mix with their Feng Shui practice? The Chinese have many different types of arts, as do we here in the Western world, but would you feel comfortable with a cardiovascular doctor that studied with some scientists on UFO'S and has a degree in dentistry, professing that this will be part of how he treats your illness? REMEMBER FENG SHUI IS NOT A REGULATED PRACTICE. USE  YOUR COMMON SENSE. IF SOMETHING SOUNDS LIKE MUNBO JUMBO - IT PROBABLY IS!

3. How long have they been practicing?

Whether they have just finished their training or have practiced for many years is not always the most important issue.  What you need to discern is - does their answers to your questions and  your comfort level with this person in general, feel positive? Also, do they have a specialty area? Do they do mostly business or commercial? Gardens?  Homes? Or a do try have experience and training in several different areas?

4. What questions do they ask you?

Depending on the school of Feng Shui they practice, the questions you will be asked, will vary. This is another instance to determine whether you are comfortable with the practitioner.

5. What kind of cures, enhancements or remedies do they use?

Remember,  a viable practitioner blends your needs -  with your decor. Your home does not have to look like a Chinese restaurant when the practitioner is done,  unless that is the decor you have!

6. Are they willing to supply Client testimonials?

This can be difficult for a newer consultant, but one who has practiced for years should be able to give these to you - if you believe it is needed for your comfort zone with this particular consultant.

7. How much is their fee?

Fees can vary greatly. Do not feel embarrassed to pin them down. Given the information you have given them on your needs and the questions they have asked you, it is quite feasible to be quoted pretty realistic final price. Also, does this fee include travel time? Follow up?

8. What does their fee include?

Depending on what is needed, at the very least you should receive a written report. Another issue is follow up. Does the fee include offering follow up conversation with you, or clarification on the report? It should. Of course if a practitioner needs to make another trip to your space it is very likely there may be an additional fee.

9. Are they insured?

This is an important question. What happens if they get hurt in your home? What if something is broken by the practitioner during the visit. Remember you never contract services with any service provider (even Feng Shui), unless they are insured.

Do not be afraid or intimidated to ask these questions. If during your discussion with the potential consultant  they say  anything you do not understand - get clarification!

A  Feng Shui Consultant or Teacher is there to advise and/or teach you. This is a relationship that has impact on you and your space. It is always your choice to accept or reject any advise, cures or enhancements you are given.
